Obituary

Sarah Elizabeth Titus

September 21, 1923 - November 27, 2019

Sarah passed away as gracefully as she lived her life.  She leaves behind family and friends who were the lucky recipients of her unconditional love, freely given hugs and kisses, ready comfort, healing hands, sense of humor and amazing example of how to stay strong, be positive, love one another, and stay engaged in life.  She was truly exceptional, and we are blessed for having been touched by her endearing ways. You are cherished, Sarah, and missed mightily, but let you go we must!

Sarah started her life in Tampa, Florida, as a fighter surviving pleurisy as an infant.  Legend has it that she won the beautiful baby award. She grew up swimming the Hillsborough River and was considered an excellent diver and swimmer.  In her youth she played guitar alongside her banjo- and mandolin-picking siblings. After her family moved to Pontiac, Michigan, while in high school you could find her working the Woolsworth’s soda fountain alongside her sister. As a young woman she supported her country during World War II working at the Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington.  She then moved back to Tampa where she met her lifelong mate, Archie. They moved to New England where Archie was from. They started their family on the idyllic Doris Duke estate where Archie tended to her orchids. They eventually ended up in Long Beach, California where she retired from McDonnell Douglas.  There she received several awards for excellence and dedication to her work as an aircraft assembler. They retired at the Charleston Beaches in Oregon where they poured their energy and love into creating their home by the ocean. When that became too much they followed their daughter to Ashland where they spent many happy years and where she received great joy volunteering for Ashland Community Hospital and for Food & Friends, receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Sarah was predeceased by her beloved husband, Archie, and her young son Albert.  She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law Debra and Chris Cowan of Talent, Oregon; her grandson Chad Cowan and his wife Amanda Cowan of Truckee, California; her granddaughter Megan Titus of Quilcene, Washington; and her grandson Brent Cowan, his wife Sara Anglin as well as their sons Brayden and Dylan of Kaneohe, Hawaii.

As she wished, a private family commemoration will be held on the Oregon Coast at Charleston Beach Parks where they all spent many happy times together. Sarah loved  children and, should you wish to make a donation, please do so in Sarah’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Several nurses at Rogue Regional Medical Center deserve mention for their exceptional palliative care, making Sarah and her family as comfortable as possible. Truly exceptional!
