IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles Frederick
Mettler
August 29, 1932 – May 28, 2024
It is with a heavy heart that we mark the passing of our beloved father and grandfather.
Chuck was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to Fred and Grace, and joined his two sisters, Marie and Claire. He grew up in Easton, Pennsylvania. He became an Eagle Scout, played drums in a garage band and graduated from Wilson High School in 1950. He joined the US Air Force in 1951 and spent a stint in Guam during the Korean War as an in-flight mechanic on a B-36. He then was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington. It was in Spokane that he met his wife to be, Jean, during a blind date. We say during because they were not each other's date! Anyway, that romance resulted in a May 1954 wedding.
Chuck and his bride returned to Easton in search of a career. Instead, they happily started a family as son Richard was born. Six months later they loaded their '52 Chevy and headed cross country back to Spokane. Chuck landed a great job with General Electric. Shortly after, daughter Karen was born.
GE transferred Chuck and family all over the Northwest. From Spokane to Wenatchee to Beaverton to Medford. Then when asked to move back to Beaverton he said, "No thanks, we want to raise our family here in Medford." Sons David and Matthew were born in Medford. Chuck took a job working for a retail appliance store that he had been wholesaling to. He eventually got hired away by Jack Day to run Modern Appliance. Not too long after that he became managing partner of Modern. Most folks will know that Chuck's TV commercials became legendary.
After selling the business he "semi-retired" and became fully involved in promoting and managing youth sports in Medford. He also had a huge presence at the Medford YMCA, with sports, outdoor camps and fundraising.
Chuck's faith was evidenced by a lifelong relationship with the Lutheran church. He held leadership positions, organized potlucks and greatly enjoyed Bible study over beer and pizza. But his biggest love at church was choir and the choral groups of which he was a part.
Chuck spent the last 16 years at Horton Plaza. At Horton he made many, many new friendships with both residents and staff alike. Calling Bingo in the afternoon, playing cards many evenings, traveling to more than a few off-site adventures and even playing Santa Claus. Chuck also helped promote Horton by making some very entertaining TV commercials, including "The Most Interesting Retiree in the World".
Chuck is survived by his sister Claire. Children Rich & Terry (Hald) Mettler, Karen & Jim Fieguth, Dave & Karen (Holzkamp) Mettler, Matt Mettler. Grandchildren Jensen & Lauren Mettler, Scott & Maxine Mettler and Molly & Tom Olen. Tyler & Jamie Fieguth. Genna Mettler and Grace & Nick Jones. Great-Grandchildren Leo and Miles Mettler and Genevieve Fieguth.
Chuck was predeceased by his loving wife Jean and his daughter-in-law Lisa (Altenburger) Mettler.
