David Lee Whitehead passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at the age of 75 after battling pancreatic cancer. He was born on May 7, 1948, in Hanford, CA, to parents Porter Lee Whitehead and Virginia Oprial Dodson. David graduated from Hanford High School in 1966. On June 8, 1968, he married Bonnie E M Krum in the LDS Oakland Temple, and they were just one month away from celebrating their 55th anniversary.
David served as a Vietnam Veteran from 1969 to 1974 in the US Air Force, stationed in Thailand and Germany. His military experience gave him a variety of job skills that he used in different organizations, including LockHeed/Boeing, NASA Johnson Space Center, and Pacific Gas and Electric. David retired as a Broadcast Engineer for KUFW, the United Farmworkers Radio Station under Cesar Chavez.
In his free time, David enjoyed hobbies such as Amateur (HAM) Radio, Science Fiction, building and repairing electronic devices, motorcycle riding, and traveling with his family. He entertained others with fun songs and magic tricks. Later in life, he spent quality time with his sons fixing up his two racing cars and holding his cat, Dino. David was preceded in death by his son, Dwayne Laurence Whitehead (February 2006). He is survived by his wife, Bonnie E M Krum, his daughter Darlene, who is married to Bryan Whitlock, and his four sons: Davis Whitehead, married to Angela Keatts; Dale Whitehead, married to Amanda Hughes; Dustin Whitehead, married to Sarah Veare; and Donne Whitehead, married to Heather Walrath. He leaves behind 21 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, his dear friend Floyd Swanger, and his cat, Dino.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 15, 2023, at 9:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 11175 OR-62, Eagle Point, Oregon. Immediately following the service, internment will take place at Eagle Point National Cemetery, located at 2763 Riley Rd, Eagle Point, Oregon, at 11:00 am.
