Greg was born February 5, 1957, in Hawthorne, California, to Norman and Betty Witsman. He graduated from Anaheim High School in 1975. Greg joined the Air Force and had the best intentions until a significant knee injury got him an Honorable Discharge and a ticket home, where he followed in his fathers footsteps and became a contractor. He and Pam met while she was working at Kentucky Fried Chicken. He went in for lunch and ordered a 3-piece BBQ meal with all white meat center-breast, and she gave him an extra one. She had already caught his eye, which made him notice her even more. A relentless pursuit started until she agreed to go on a date with him. The rest is history, as they say. Greg and Pam had forty-five years of marriage, six daughters who are all happily married, 15 grandkids, and so much love, admiration, and commitment.
As a husband, he always showed support and love for Pam. Whether it was a new project she wanted done around the house or a pursuit of a new hobby, he was always willing to put out the effort to see her smile. As a father, he had a firm but caring approach to parenting, sometimes a challenging demeanor, but this played a significant role in shaping each of his daughters into the strong women they are today. As a Papaw, his favorite title ever, he loved each grandchild with all his heart.
Greg could talk to anyone, which was why he impacted so many people throughout his life. Over this last year, the number of people reaching out to tell stories of how Greg has helped or impacted them has been a beautiful testament to the man he was inside and out. He always loved giving gifts and making people smile, even if it wasnt in the budget. Christmas was Greg and Pams favorite time of year, putting together their giant Christmas village and decorating for the visitors they would soon have.
From construction to driving a big rig, Greg always had a good time at work and knew how to make people laugh. Driving a truck became his passion, and he always made friends throughout the industry. He knew how to talk to people and cut a joke, even when it was an inappropriate time.
Having six daughters to give away and six sons-in-law to get to know was a difficult task to say the least. There were struggles and forgiveness throughout the process, but he loved them all. He was very proud of his daughters and the men they married. He wouldnt have traded any of it, for they gave him his beautiful grandchildren that he adored with all his heart.
The initial diagnosis of ALS was a shock to the family, and all were hoping for a false positive. Dealing with a terminal illness and having the unknown in the future brought the family closer together than ever. In the end, there were happy times and sad times, but it was all time that will be fondly remembered forever. His faith in Jesus and knowing he would see his family again in heaven got him through the hard days. Only a great man can raise all girls like Greg did and have them all love Jesus as they do. If he did anything right in his life, it was raising the women he and Pam raised, continuing his legacy, and keeping the faith that they will all be together again someday, seated at our Fathers table, one great reunion feast.
In the end, Gregs desire to be a disciple of Christ was a driving force. He impacted the lives of many nurses who cared for him by sharing the love of Christ and wanting to plant the seed of faith in their hearts. He did this by being the charming, authentic self he perfected during this last year. The humility that fell upon Greg has left a lasting impression on many, especially his family. A newfound respect and admiration have imprinted on the hearts of each one of his family members. He passed into the Fathers house escorted by his loving family, serenading him with "I Love You, Lord." He opened his eyes one last time, lifted his head slightly, and tapped his word board, we believe to say, "Goodbye, I love you all." And then closed his eyes and took his last breath. We are blessed to have witnessed his strength and courage in the face of the unthinkable. He is greatly missed but will never be forgotten.
In typical Greg fashion, if he were here now, he would say,
"Im glad you got to see me."
