Obituary

Lucille Potts, 93, passed away in her apartment at Horton Plaza in Medford, Oregon on November 25, 2024. She was born Kathryn Lucille Younkin in Darrington, Washington to Lyman William and Alice Elizabeth (Crisman) Younkin on October 9, 1931. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Darrington High School in 1949 and married John William Potts in Darrington on June 18, 1949. They lived in Darrington for the next fifteen years, during which time they had two children. John worked at Three Rivers Plywood Company, and Lucille looked after the household. In 1965, John took a job as a Quality Control Supervisor with American Plywood Association, and the family moved to Mount Vernon, Washington, where they lived until John was transferred to Medford, Oregon in 1970. They quickly became active members of Eastwood Baptist Church. She loved to play the piano and did so with gusto at the church and for many other events and get togethers. When John retired, they spent a lot of time boating and fishing and travelling in their RV. After his death, in 1999, Lucille continued to live in their home, tirelessly taking care of the flowers and fruit trees, and making sure every weed that popped up in her yard was immediately removed! She did some traveling—most notably with a church group to Turkey and Greece—and always loved spending time with family and friends. In the fall of 2021, she moved into Horton Plaza retirement home.

Lucille's only sibling, Eugene Lyman Younkin, passed away in 1993. She is survived by two children, five grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Lucille's son, Lyman, lives in Vancouver, Washington with his wife Terri. His children include a son, Kevin, of Medford and a stepson, Mike O'Brien, of Beaverton, Oregon. Kevin's children are Cassie Potts of Springfield, Oregon, and Haywood, Gillian, and Emelda Potts of Medford.

Lucille's daughter, Carmen, lives in Gold Hill, Oregon with her husband Jim Whitlock. Carmen was very attentive to her mother, and Jim was always ready to lend a hand when needed. Jim's children became an integral part of the family when they were very young. Katie (Whitlock) Moxley lives in Medford, in Lucille's former house. She has three children, Kara and Emma Palmer, and Kingston Moxley. Andy Whitlock and his wife, Emily, also live in Medford. Jennifer (Whitlock) Blair and her husband, Jason, live in Jacksonville, Oregon. Andy's stepchildren are Jaden Zobel and Nathan Whitlock. Jennifer's children are Thomas and Tyler West, Greyson Stowe, Sagan and Silas Blair.

Lucille will be sorely missed by the whole family and by the many friends she made through the church, in the Medford community, and at Horton Plaza. The loss will be felt, too, by old friends back in Darrington, particularly Billie Moore, with whom she shared a lifelong friendship that began in the seventh grade.

The memorial service for Lucille will be held in the Elsie Butler room at Horton Plaza, 1122 Spring Street in Medford, Oregon at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2024. Lucille will be buried at her husband's side at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.
