IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mathew J.
Belzano
January 29, 1930 – September 27, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mathew John Belzano, Sr., who peacefully left this world on September 27th, 2024, at the age of 94. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, on January 29th, 1930, to John and Florence Belzano, Matt lived a life full of love, resilience, and dedication to his family and career.
A decorated U.S. Marine, Matt proudly served his country as a disbursing clerk at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in Santa Ana, where he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. His discipline and commitment during his military service were hallmarks of the dedication that followed him throughout his life.
Matt's professional career was marked by significant achievements. He spent many years with the Southern California Gas Company, where he held various leadership roles, including Supervisor of Customer Contact in the Southeast Division. His contributions to modernizing the company's operations, including the installation of new technologies such as automatic call distribution systems, helped improve customer service efficiency and set new standards for the utility industry.
In addition to his business accomplishments, Matt was deeply involved in his community. As a leader in the Downey Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees), he served as the organization's president and played a crucial role in organizing local events such as the annual Fourth of July fireworks display and various community fundraisers. His passion for service extended beyond his professional duties, as he also served in leadership roles with the United Crusade (Red Cross), helping raise funds for critical community services in Southern California.
Matt was a longtime member of the Church of Religious Science, where he found not only spiritual fulfillment but also met his late wife Jacquelyn whom he married in 1998. Together, they shared many years of happiness until her passing in 2017. Their connection, formed within the church community, was a testament to the deep love and companionship they shared.
Matt was a beloved figure in both his professional and personal circles, known for his integrity, leadership, and dedication to improving the lives of those around him. He was the proud father of two sons, Mathew Belzano Jr. and John Gelff (deceased), and a devoted grandfather to Mathew Belzano III and Courtney Belzano. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Andrew, Zacary, and Levi.
Matt will be laid to rest at Eagle Point National Cemetery, honoring his service to his country. His legacy of dedication, strength, and community service will live on through his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his extraordinary life. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his contributions to his country, his community, and his family.
A Celebration of Life will be planned in the near future, more details to come.
