Obituary

Michael David Irving, a man of profound talent and boundless curiosity, left this world on November 6, 2023, in Medford, Oregon. Born on December 12, 1951, in Los Angeles, California, Michael's journey was marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge, a passion for the arts, and a deep love for the great outdoors.

Michael's early years were shaped by the scenic landscapes of Oregon where he graduated from Eagle Point High School in 1970. His high school days were filled with athletic achievements in long-distance track and wrestling, but it was his self-taught guitar skills that revealed his artistic soul. Michael's musical gifts shone brightly as he played lead guitar in various bands, enchanting audiences with his ability to play by ear and his compelling voice.

Following high school, Michael's life took a turn when he was drafted into the Army towards the end of the Vietnam War, serving his country, while also giving voice to his deep belief that war is wrong. Upon his return, he channeled his focus into the building trade, rising to become a respected contractor and designer with his company Pilot Rock Building and Design. His work was not just a means to an end but a canvas for his creativity, leaving a legacy of beautiful designs and grateful clients.

Michael's interests were as varied as they were intense. Alongside his love for music, he was an avid reader and a keen political observer, always ready to engage in lively discussions with his sharp wit and insightful perspectives. His creative spirit found expression in poetry, painting, and drawing. His passion for the outdoors never waned; he cherished camping, boating, and fishing, embracing nature's tranquility. Photography became a later pursuit, with Michael collecting cameras and capturing moments through his unique lens. His intellectual and artistic pursuits were a testament to his belief in lifelong learning.

Michael's family was the cornerstone of his life. He leaves behind his loving son, Andrew Irving; his devoted siblings, Susan Irving and Scott Irving; his cherished grandson, Lucas Irving; and his adored nieces and nephews, O'Rion Irving, Isaiah Irving, and Gillian Irving. Liese Behringer, his long-time friend and companion, shared in many of Michael's adventures and creative explorations. Michael was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Patricia Irving-Johnson; his father, David Irving; his stepfather, Jack Johnson; and his stepbrother, Ron Johnson.

Those who knew Michael will remember him as adventurous, loving, and kind. A close friend captured Michael's essence, saying, "I would like to mention his sense of humility. I remember looking up where he was educated on his Facebook page, and, to my total delight, he had written 'libraries and bookstores'."

The melodies Michael composed, the structures he designed, and the conversations he sparked will continue to resonate with all who were touched by his presence. His ability to bring a smile to anyone's face and his willingness to go above and beyond for others are the hallmarks of his enduring legacy.

Michael David Irving lived a life rich in experiences and relationships. His departure leaves behind silent instruments and unfinished sketches, but the music of his life plays on in the hearts of those who loved him. Michael's story is a symphony of intellect, artistry, and compassion—a composition that will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
