Richard E. Atterbury, age 91, of Ashland, Oregon passed away at his residence on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
Born December 31, 1934, in Roseburg, Oregon, he was the son of the late Elmo Peter Atterbury and Verneita Atterbury (nee Pickens). Rich's family relocated to Medford when he was very young. He grew up attending Medford schools where he was noted for his athletic prowess and a relentless drive to improve. A standout athlete for the Medford Black Tornado, he lettered in both baseball and basketball, earning All-State honors on the court. He went on to attend Gonzaga University where he played Freshman basketball, and then to Oregon State University, earning a degree in Business Administration with a technical minor in Forestry. Upon graduation, Rich began a career with the Medford Corporation (Medco) that spanned nearly 40 years. On August 7, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Rosie. Their marriage was a devoted covenant that lasted over 71 years, ending only with his passing.
A lifelong athlete, Rich remained active through cycling, running, camping and hiking with his family, and he really enjoyed cooking and barbequing for them. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. Beyond his physical pursuits he was a gifted woodworker and master fly tyer. Rich will be remembered most for his profound love of the outdoors == especially his appreciation of trees, and Crater Lake == his great sense of humor, and the immense joy he found in his faith, his friends, and his large beloved family.
