Obituary

Roger L. McLean

Born June 20,1957 in Medford, Oregon to Bonnie Jean Allen and Kerwin Lee McLean.

Spent most of his early years attending local schools (Jefferson Elementary, McLaughlin Junior High, Medford Mid High), Roger graduated from Medford Senior High School in 1975.

Roger's early years included weekly if not daily pick-up games in a variety of sports with the local neighborhood gang and nonstop bicycle riding every day.

Roger grew up in a neighborhood surrounded by Pear Orchards and ate more than his fair share of pears walking to and from schools he attended where the short cuts all took him through the Pear Orchards of the time.

He always felt a slight sadness going back to Medford over the years to see family and observing the Pear Orchards slowly but surely being replaced by housing subdivisions, parks and other buildings.

During High School, he held a number of jobs including picking strawberries, mowing yards, working as first a dishwasher, then cook and finally being promoted to Assistant Manager at the local Jerry's restaurant.

Roger attended Southern Oregon State College (now Southern Oregon University), from 1975 to 1979, attaining his B.S. (in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management).

During his college years, Roger was very involved with the campus, and a partial list of his activities included serving as Vice President of the Phi Beta Lambda business fraternity, Resident Assistant at Forest Hall, Head Resident at Suzanne Holmes Dormitory, and many other activities. During his senior year, Roger won a fill tuition Scholarship given by the Jackson County Independent Insurance Agents awarded to an outstanding Business Senior.

From 1979 to 1980 Roger continued at Southern Oregon State College, attaining an M.S.B.A (Masters of Science and Business Administration).

While working on his master's in business, Roger also was awarded one of the very first Graduate Assistantships ever given out by SOSC, where he was the Graduate Assistant in charge of the Undeclared Academic Counseling Program at SOSC. During this time Roger was also selected to be the President of the College's Student Court.

During college Roger worked a number of jobs but spent most of his time working for the US Post Office in Medford, Oregon, working all the way through his graduate year.

After college Roger spent about 9 months as a department manager for Meir n Frank in Salem Oregon, until he was fortunate to be offered a position with Hallmark Cards working as an Account Manager and subsequently being promoted to Account Executive with Hallmark. During this time, Roger worked for Hallmark in Oklahoma City and then Wichita Kansas. Roger thoroughly enjoyed his time at Hallmark and found living in another part of the country to be quite enlightening.

During his time at Hallmark, Roger made many friends and learned a lot about business and life. At Hallmark Roger won many sales awards in his District and Region and also won the R.B. Hall award twice, which was given annually to the top 1% of the Hallmark Sales force in the World. Hallmark was very generous to Roger sending him on paid weeklong cruise and vacations to such spots as Marco Island off the coast of Florida and Padre Island off the coast of Texas more than once. Roger often said he would have stayed at Hallmark all of his working life, if he didn't have a strong yen to come back to the west coast.

So after over five years Roger left Hallmark to go to Law School at The McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento California. He was awarded a first-year scholarship at McGeorge. During his first year at McGeorge Roger made Deans list and was able to transfer for his second and third year to the university of California at Davis before attaining his J. D. in 1989.

During Law School Roger was able to participate as a certified law student actually trying cases at the Federal Immigration Court in San Francisco.

After Law School, Roger worked for several law firms in San Jose and also served as the General Counsel and Director of Human resources for Myers Internet during the hey day of the internet bubble.

In 2004, Roger opened his own law firm (eventually named The McLean Law Group) and the firm continued very successfully until his retirement in 2025.

Roger was very proud of all the outstanding client relationships he was fortunate to have over the years and for his trusted and hard-working loyal staff at his firm.

During this period, Roger was also chosen as a multi-year recipient of the prestigious "Super Lawyer" awarded to the very best attorneys in California.

While Roger was very thankful to be able to practice law, he found owning his own firm and managing the daily machinations of a small but vital law office even more rewarding and fulfilling.

Roger was pleased to be able to support his alma mater over the years, Southern Oregon University and the University of Davis Law School both financially and through occasional speaking engagements.

But of all of Roger's accomplishments, he was most proud of his three children and loved spending time with them. He always felt being a dad was by far the most challenging and rewarding job he ever held.

Roger is preceded in death by both of his parents.

He is survived by his son, Connor; daughters, Sophie and Marissa; sister Teri (Joe) Buck, Krista (Mike); brother Patrick (Sonja); nephews Darrel, Brandon, and Jason; nieces Ericka and Kacie' and many cousins.
