Obituary

Roger Paul Morgenegg passed away peacefully in York, PA on Thursday January 29, 2026, days short of his 91st birthday. Roger was born on February 1, 1935 to Ernest Edgar and Lillian Ruth Morgenegg in San Francisco, CA. He was the second of four boys, currently (and lovingly) referred to as "the brothers." He grew up in Denver, where he had a paper route, attended elementary and high school and excelled in math. He attended BYU in Provo, UT and then left to serve a 2 ½ year LDS mission to the Southern States, Spanish-speaking. When he returned, he finished his degree in mechanical engineering at Colorado State University. He had several jobs during his career, the last being at Precision Components Corporation in York, PA. He retired April 30,1998.

After his college graduation, while working in Denver, he met Billie Rae Ritchel, an attractive nurse; they started dating. We joke that his mother may have courted Mom as much as he did. They were married on April 13, 1964 in the Salt Lake City Temple. He loved Billie Rae dearly. To her, he was intelligent, kind, trustworthy and holy. She made a roast for dinner every Sunday. Dad always cut the roast with his electric knife and would end the afternoon washing all of the dishes while listening to classical music on the radio. After their children were grown and gone, she and Dad often enjoyed evening dinners of soup and sandwiches over never-ending games of Skipbo.

Roger was the father of five children. To them, he was smart, devoted, wise, and funny in a dad sort of way. They fondly remember his aspirations to be a maestro, if only in his imagination. He grandly, and frequently, imitated a conductor while listening to his beloved symphony records. He loved trains and finally built a model railroad track after his kids were grown and gone and not likely to destroy it. Summer holidays meant competitive games of croquet on the side yard. Monday evenings often included very competitive games of PIT. Dad was, thankfully, great at math and filled the role of competent math tutor to most of us. Days usually ended with Dad calling us all in for family prayer.

He loved to sing and later in life joined the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing In America (S.P.E.B. S.Q.S.A.). He thoroughly enjoyed participating in the chorus and traveled to different venues to compete with them.

Roger was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully throughout his life in many callings, including Bishop of the local congregation for several years. He loved God and he loved the gospel. He served as a sealer in the Washington DC and Philadelphia Temples before his illness prevented his continuation in this assignment.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Eric Paul Morgenegg, and a great grandson. He is survived by four children: Shauna (Gene) Drake, Rachel (Daryl) Ivins, Cheryl (Michael) Josie and Kyle (Heather) Morgenegg, 10 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at Country Meadows for the loving service and tender care they showed our dad for the past two years, especially those in the Connections Care Unit. A special thanks also to all the loving friends, neighbors, and ward members who have served him and our mom in so many ways over the years.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 6 at 2:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2100 Hollywood Drive, York, PA.
