PETER BARRY RATCLIFFE
November 28th 1934 – March 1st 2021
Peter Barry Ratcliffe passed away peacefully March 1st 2021 with family by his side.
Peter was born November 28th 1934 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, UK. He had an elder brother, Derek, and twin brother, Tony.
Always passionate about the Sea, Peter was a Sea Cadet during his school years at St Joseph College, Stoke-on-Trent. In 1951, aged 16 he joined the famous, HMS Conway naval training school in North Wales. Peter became a Naval Officer with Royal Mail Lines and travelled the world until coming ashore to join the management group at General Motors, UK in 1963. After management promotions and traveling from South Wales to Scotland, Peter moved back to England where he set up and owned a trailer business, PR Trailers, then a hotel in Llandudno, North Wales, followed by the part ownership (with his wife and daughter) of a day spa in Medford, Oregon.
In 1960, Peter met and fell in love with Jacqui, and they were married September 14th 1961. They enjoyed a beautiful happy marriage for over 56 years, until the passing of his beloved wife Jacqui on June 21st 2018. Their love goes on forever in heaven and their precious memories will be held close in the hearts of their family and those who loved them.
Peter and Jacqui had a passion for new adventures and travel, they enjoyed many holidays all over the world, as well as several cruises to the Caribbean, Mexico and Alaska. They moved to Medford, Oregon in 2000 to be close to their daughter and grandchildren, after visiting the States many times since 1987. Peter was fit and healthy right up to his later years, he enjoyed snorkeling in 2017, was an avid golfer and did daily exercises (a routine he learnt from his Conway years) with twenty press ups, until late last year!
Peter was always a true Officer and a Gentleman with impeccable manners and charm. He was patient, calm and always immaculate in his appearance. He taught those close to him that if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing well! People were drawn to Peter, he could make friends with both the young and old. He had the gift of being able to not just talk, but really take the time to listen to what you said during a conversation. Peter was extremely optimistic and his glass was certainly always half full. He had a wonderful sense of humour and he could light up any room with his presence. He loved and cared deeply for all animals, and would give his last penny to help someone in need. He will be greatly missed by everybody who had the honour to meet and love him.
Peter is survived by his son, Paul Ratcliffe; daughter-in-law, Sharon Ratcliffe; daughter, Michelle Obereigner; son-in-law, Mike Obereigner; grandson, James Sherbourne; and granddaughter, Hannah Sherbourne.
Many thanks to family and friends for all your love and support during this time; thank you to Dr. Margulies for years of kindness and always going above and beyond; Thank you to Dr. Hong and Dr. Pearson in cardiology; Thank you to Asante and Signature hospice for your short care during those final days; and for the loving care from his granddaughter and RN Hannah, and to Perl Funeral Home for your excellent service throughout, especially with our wishes to send Peter off in his Naval uniform!
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date when friends and family are able to attend.
In honor of Peter please donate to your favourite charity or plant a bulb or tree in lieu of sending flowers.
